A Brush with the Abyss - The Miraculous Medal and Me

As the sun dipped low, casting a golden sheen over the undulating waves, I found myself reflecting on a memory so distant yet vivid, it could have been yesterday. The scent of salt and sunscreen, the laughter of families, and the rhythmic dance of the ocean at the beach all conspired to bring me back to a time when the world seemed as vast and mysterious as the deep blue sea itself.

You see, my mother was a woman of unwavering faith, a Marian devotee whose devotion was as deep as the ocean and as bright as the stars above. Her belief in the power of the Miraculous Medal was not just a conviction; it was a living, breathing part of her daily existence. And like any good story that weaves through the fabric of a family, this tiny piece of metal etched with the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary became a symbol of my childhood.

I was but a child, one of the brood who received this small token from my mother dearest. It wasn't just a gift; it was an armor against the unseen, a shield of faith pinned to my chest every day. I wore it religiously, not fully understanding its significance, but trusting in the quiet strength it represented.

Our Sundays were sacred, not just for the spiritual nourishment but for the familial bonds that were forged and reinforced by trips to the movie cinema, or to the beach. My father, the captain of our little ship, would steer us towards the sandy shores for a day of relaxation and fun. It was on one of these excursions that the miraculous nature of the medal was put to the test.

Picture a young child, buoyant with innocence, encircled by a salbabida, the Filipino term for a lifebuoy. It was my aquatic chariot, and I was the carefree monarch of my watery kingdom. But even monarchs face trials, and mine came in the form of a rogue wave, a behemoth that rose with the fury of Poseidon himself.

The adults, those appointed guardians of my safety, were momentarily distracted by their own survival. In the chaos, I was dislodged from my floatation device and plunged into the abyss. The world turned dark, the sounds muffled, and fear, that primal and unyielding emotion, took hold.😨

The photo was created with the intention of providing you with a visual representation of my story.

There, in the depths, where light seemed a mere memory, I faced a crossroads. Panic clawed at my mind, but amidst the turmoil, a sliver of light beckoned from above. "What should I do?" The question was a silent scream in my mind. And then, instinct took over. My arms, untrained in the art of swimming, began to move with a rhythm they did not know they possessed.

Ascension was slow, a dreamlike rise through the water column until, with a gasp, I broke the surface. As I caught my breath, my eyes scanned the surroundings, searching for any sign of help or solace. The relief on the faces of the adults mirrored my own, a mixture of gratitude and disbelief. Tears followed, a natural release after staring into the face of danger.

It was then that we noticed the medal, my Miraculous Medal, no longer pinned but clinging to my neck as if to say, "I'VE GOT YOU." It was a sight that left me dumbfounded, my heart pounding in my chest. How could this be? Detached from its pin, yet firmly attached to me, as if the Virgin Mary herself had adjusted and intervened, ensuring that I would not be left alone in the midst of my ordeal.

Was it a miracle that I emerged unscathed, or was it mere coincidence? Some would argue the latter, citing luck or chance. But for me, a child of eight or nine, with no knowledge of swimming, it was nothing short of a miracle. I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of awe and wonder, knowing that I had been chosen to experience such a miraculous event.

The Miraculous Medal, a symbol of faith and protection, had been with me in my moment of need. It had been a silent sentinel, a reminder that even in the darkest depths, there is light above. And sometimes, all we need to do is keep flapping our arms, keep moving towards the light, and believe in the possibility of miracles.

As I ventured further on my journey and became consumed with the busyness of life, the significance of the miraculous medal slipped from my mind. However, there are moments when I am reminded of the extraordinary event that occurred during my youth. Though it may occasionally fade from my memory, it remains indelibly etched within me, an experience that will forever be ingrained in my being.Red Heart Flying Emoticon Emoticons
