SHANGHAI NEW YEAR COUNTDOWN

Past 11:00 pm when we woke up from a deep slumber and decided to join with hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Nanjing Road to welcome New Year 2009. It was a different experience for us since it was our first time to celebrate New Year out of the country. (Note: This is a bit late, I know that, but I still need to post this anyway. Some information might be helpful when you decide to spend your holiday in Shanghai.) ;-)
As we walked out of the hotel's front door, there were already quite sizable noisy merrymakers that stormed the street clad in their winter attire.
We waited right across from the hotel for the start of the New Year's countdown. Nearby, concert performance was still going on and the upbeat music blared from giant speakers. The air of festivity was felt in every corner of the street.

As soon as the clock struck 12, everyone cheered and whooped it up while brilliant and colorful fireworks light up the city sky. Next to us was a young couple wishing a Happy New Year and displayed their affection by hugging and kissing on the lips. Ahh, teenage romance... But alas, I did not capture this one.

Later we popped into a café just beside the hotel and ordered two steaming hot cup of espresso to help ward off the cold. Soon we went back to our hotel and surprisingly a complimentary "Happy New Year Dessert" was delivered to our room.
This thoughtful gesture made the start of our year memorable! (^0^)
